The business challenge

The goals of the Public Network team

Decathlon's Public Network team, part of the Cloud Platform Engineering (CPE) business unit, is made up of 10 people responsible for supporting internal clients with their secure infrastructure needs. To reinforce this team, Decathlon brought in a Synapsys Cloud DevOps engineer to help clients publish applications on the public network, covering WAF needs, bug fixes, and feature development.

Our solution

Three core technologies powering public network security

The Public Network team works across three main solutions: Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB), which distributes incoming internet traffic evenly across servers in different, often geographically distributed data centers to optimize performance and ensure high availability; Web Application Firewall (WAF), where Decathlon uses Cloudflare to monitor, filter, and block traffic between web applications and the internet, protecting against various attacks and vulnerabilities; and Public DNS, which translates domain names into IP addresses to improve browsing performance and strengthen security, with the team managing the public records that let clients resolve Decathlon's applications.

Implementation

Managing secure infrastructure and building agile practices

The Synapsys engineer's build scope covered continuous improvement of the Cloudflare API through Python development and automation updates, process automation using Serverless on AWS, optimizing Terraform modules to simplify Load Balancing certificate creation, managing complex incidents requiring deep network expertise, refactoring the Cloudflare API, and managing certificates tied to internet publishing on GCP and AWS.

Beyond the technical work, the Synapsys DevOps engineer also helped accelerate agile culture within Decathlon, improving agile rituals, user story definition, and sprint management.

Measurable results

A more secure, better-run infrastructure team

This engagement strengthened Decathlon's secure public network infrastructure across load balancing, firewall, and DNS, while improving the team's agile delivery practices and streamlining its automation and certificate management processes.
