The Modern Workplace project: migrating to Intune

Engie's Modern Workplace project set out to progressively migrate the group's workstations to Microsoft Intune, with the goal of standardizing Windows environments and reducing infrastructure costs.

Engie's entities around the world traditionally managed their IT fleets differently, some running legacy SCCM-based environments, others more modern setups. The Modern Workplace project aimed to bring a unified view of how work environments were managed and configured. To accelerate this large-scale migration, Engie brought in a Synapsys Modern Workplace engineer to serve as onboarder.

Autopilot as an efficient enrollment method

Engie's teams chose Autopilot as the enrollment method for Intune. With Autopilot, Engie automates the installation of about ten mandatory applications on every user's workstation worldwide, giving everyone a unified, secure application environment. This approach manages configuration transparently for users, without relying on hybrid setups.

A structured, gradual rollout across entities

The Synapsys onboarder's role was to translate legacy environments into modern ones across each Engie entity involved in the migration, following a clear process: presenting the project to local IT teams, running a proof of concept, building the environment, a pilot phase of a few weeks equipping test users, and finally full deployment.

Engie chose a break-and-fix migration strategy for a gradual rollout, waiting for a user's PC to reach end of life before replacing it with a new device running the modern environment.
